The inter-state boundary dispute between Assam and Meghalaya has once again come to the fore with local organisations calling for a 36-hour Meghalaya bandh on Friday in protest against a visit by two Assam ministers.
Official sources said Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Environment Minister Rockybul Hussain are scheduled to visit Langpih on Saturday to lay the foundation stone of a health centre besides some official quarters.
The Meghalaya Government has sought the intervention of the Centre to “refrain” Assam from encroaching upon its land.
The bandh has been called by the Synjuk Ki Khlieh Nongsynshar (traditional institution heads) of Langpih area.
According to official sources, Meghalaya Chief Minister Donkupar Roy has spoken to Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta on Wednesday and asked him to advice the Assam Government to cancel the scheduled foundation laying ceremony in Langpih as it would amount to unwarranted encroachment upon Meghalaya’s territory.
Even as Roy spoke to Gupta, it dispatched two platoons of Meghalaya Police to the area. Langpih in West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya shares its boundary with Kamrup district of Assam.
