GUNTUR, APRIL 6: Top seeded Russian’s GM Andrey Shariyazdanov scored a convincing victory over Indian International Master V Saravanan in 27 moves and became the sole leader with 3.5 points at the end of round four in the Chalapathi GM Chess Tournament played at Chalapathi Residential School, here, on Thursday.
The Russian GM’s Sicilian opening was countered with the closed system by the Indian master. In an equal position arising after the early middle game, Saravanan undertook a wrong plan with a Queen move to ‘b3’ on the 16th move. Further he weakened his position a few moves later with 19 be3. Meanwhile, Shariyazdanov developed his pieces to good squares and with a Queen and rook battery started a strong attack on the King side. Faced with a loss of a piece besides King exposed dangerously, Saravanan resigned on 27th move.
Indian GM Pravin Thipsay held Grand Master Ilder Ibragimovto a comfortable draw in 28 moves. Starting on the black side of the Kings Indian defence, Thipsay faced the Fianchetto system from the Russian GM. Thipsay deviated from normal theory with 10… e X d4 equalised. After exchange of bishops and rooks on the ‘c’, there was not any thing much for the players to go on.
GM Barua scored over GM elect Abhijit Kunte after a long back lasting 67 moves. The game started with Sicilan Scheviningen variation which was met by Barua’s Be2 system. Initially Barua could not make head way into the blacks position but on the final 40th move of the time control Kunte with only the aim of completing the required number of moves blundered his ‘b5’ pawn and on the very next move he sacrificed e pawn to try for counter play. However, Barua in return sacrificed the exchange to obtain three connected passed pawns which ultimately decided the issue.
