The government is drawing up a blueprint to develop a string of small ports in the entire Indian peninsula in order to promote coastal shipping. The ministry of shipping will be appointing consultants to study the location of ports.
Addressing a conference organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, shipping secretary MP Pinto said the matter would be taken up with the state governments.
While planning smaller ports, the government is actively considering budgetary support for capital dredging in Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) near Mumbai, and also for Kolkata and Kochi ports to deepen the navigation channels and facilitate easy movement of bigger ships, joint secretary RK Jain said.
The facility would be extended to other ports in the second phase. Jain mentioned that unnecessary overlapping of investment should be avoided without compromising on inter-port competition. This would help in planning for integrated development of ports.
