The BJP today announced that it would soon issue whip to its MLAs to vote against the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government in UP.

BJP general secretary Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi made this announcement to put an end to the speculation that the BJP may offer a safe passage to the new government by asbtaining during confidence motion on September 8.

This announcement notwithstanding, the speculation continued owing to a soft BJP-stance towards the Mulayam regime. If the Chief Minister is unable to cobble together a majority, the BJP may still help him indirectly by ensuring the absence of some MLAs and let him sail through the majority-test.

BJP president M. Venkaiah Naidu has convened a meeting of key UP leaders here for September 5 to basically discuss life without the BSP in the state now. Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani would also attend the meeting.

The party has to totally re-orient itself in UP. Its leadership decimated, ranks divided, and mass-base eroded the state unit requires plenty of attention. Afterall, whatever little hope Mayawati offered to the high command in the next Lok Sabha polls is also gone.
