8226; Congratulations to Shekhar Gupta for an excellent article giving the people hope for Bihar 8216;Stirrings in a hopeless land8217; IE, February 26. A positive attitude to an issue can go a long way in solving it. If it is known all over the country that the people of Bihar yearn for education, I am sure there is some way to give it to them. The central government could be pushed to take note of this if the state government continues to neglect the same. NGOs could help. All successful Biharis could try to give something back to their state. An educated Bihar will be in a better position to fight off the rot visionless leaders have led it into.

A rare courage

8226; Saeed Naqvi is right in 8216;The epic tale of Bilkis Bano8217; IE, February 25. Such great opportunities give our nation strength and character. Bilkis should be considered for a Padma Shri or a higher award for just mustering this rare courage in a society that does not come out in flying colours in respect of moral courage!

Blame is ours

8226; This refers to 8216;UP boy8217;s NASA flight of fancy crashlands8217; IE, February 26. I cannot help but wonder how a little boy has fooled an entire nation. This is not the flight of fancy of a young teenager, but of an entire nation. It took a
denial from NASA to bring out the truth.

8226; The Ballia youth who faked a NASA exam has done a favour to the nation by exposing our ignorance about science. We believe exam marks are a sure sign of a brilliant scientific career. We believe a student can distinguish himself in science without proper training. We believe that certification from a foreign agency is the highest scientific achievement. If this incident teaches us a lesson about these immature beliefs, it would be worth rewarding the young boy
instead of punishing him.

Us and them

8226; Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria said recently that 8220;we8221; would not permit 8220;conversions of poor and illiterate persons, carried out with the help of allurements and money8230;.8221; Do 8220;they8221; not object to the more common phenomenon of people being bribed to become 8220;witnesses8221; and give false testimony in courts? Does the Religious Affairs Minister deal with that?

Derailed by truck

8226; Ila Patnaik presents a valid roadmap for squeezing inefficiencies out of the railway system in 8216;Let the iron rooster take wing8217; IE, February 26. However, I am not convinced that efficiency improvement alone is sufficient to compete with the trucking industry. Consider the handicap the railways have as a freight transport entity. Customers have to still rely on trucks to ship the goods from shops and warehouses to trains at the source end and the other way around at the destination, which is logistically more complex that just using a truck for a point to point shipment. Trucks offer more flexibility, options etc. So in the end if the railways cannot compete with trucking on all fronts, they lose. As movers of people and perhaps to transport coal, iron ore etc, trains might win if they make changes along the lines that you suggest.
