
MUMBAI, May 9: A Syndicate Bank security guard foiled a robbery attempt on Friday at Matunga by opening fire at the robbers. Police said Vishwanath Kamble fired a round at the robbers at Bhau Daji road junction, Matunga at around 11.30 am when they tried to rob the bank employees of the cash they were carrying. Prakash Kini, 43, manager of Syndicate Bank at Jogeshwari, had withdrawn Rs 10 lakh from the bank’s Dadar branch and was carrying it to Jogeshwari. He was accompanied by Kamble and Bhiva Waghmare. The trio was travelling in a taxi (MH 02 R 4615). When the taxi reached a junction, four men travelling in a white Maruti van, overtook the taxi and forced it to stop. The four, armed with choppers and iron rods, attacked the taxi and broke its front glass.
Realising the danger, Kamble opened fire at the robbers. The bullet failed to hit any of the robbers. They then attacked Kamble with chopper and snatched the gun from Kamble and fled.
