Board of Control for Cricket in India8217;s BCC administrative head Ratnakar Shetty today made it clear that Col Anil Kaul was not a liaison officer, but a security officer appointed for the Pakistan team by the ICC. That effectively distanced the BCCI from the contentious issue.
At the same time, even as Kaul himself made it clear that he will be standing by his comments made on television, the real liaison officer, Ranjit Bajaj, said no slapping incident ever took place.
8220;As the host tournament director, I wish to clarify that BCCI did not appoint Anil Kaul as the liaison officer of the Pakistan team as is being said,8221; Shetty said in a release. 8220;Kaul was appointed as the close protection officer of the Pakistan team by Bob Nichols the security consultant engaged by the ICC.8221;
Kaul remained unfazed by PCB8217;s threat to go to the ICC. 8220;I am not overly concerned about whether the PCB lodges a complaint against me or not. I never opened my mouth when I was on duty as the security officer. I have disclosed everything now because I want the paying public to know everything,8221; Kaul said.
Bajaj, who was in the same bus when the incident is alleged to have taken place, said whatever happened was in jest. 8220;There is no truth in this. I was sitting right behind Woolmer in the bus. Kaul and Pak team manager Talat Ali were sitting together.
Shoaib Akhtar was sitting on another seat listening to the music on his i-Pod,8221; Bajaj said in Chandigarh.
8220;Woolmer interrupted, saying he wanted to make some announcement. When he saw that Shoaib was not paying much heed, he removed his ear phones. Afterwards, Shoaib just patted Woolmer over his neck jokingly. The whole team burst into laughter.8221; PTI
