BCCI President Sharad Pawar’s first job in life was as a sports journalist.

BCCI President Sharad Pawar’s first job in life was as a sports journalist with leading Marathi newspaper ‘sakal’ in Pune.

The 68-year-old NCP chief revealed this in an interaction with journalists of a Marathi daily in Mumbai.

The Pawar family now manages Sakal group of newspapers.

“I was in college when we came across an advertisement that Sakal wanted enterprising college representatives. Then, I had a tremendous attraction towards the world of journalism and applied for the post”, Pawar said.

Pawar was among the two applicants Sakal selected. “The salary was Rs seven per month”, he said.

Pawar said he became friends with Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray after joining active politics.

“Myself, Thackeray and two others pooled Rs 5,000 each and launched a Marathi magazine on the lines of ‘Time’ magazine, Pawar said.

However, only the first issue was published and the magazine shut shop.

“Before the launch, Thackeray’s sister predicted that the magazine will become so popular that it will be difficult to find a copy in the market. Her prophecy came true in a different way”, Pawar said.
