PUNE, Oct 11: Raju Sambhaji Thorat, a 35-year-old resident of Ulhasnagar, was arrested after he tried to relieve a city trader of Rs 5,000 at the Pune Railway Station branch of Pune Development Credit Cooperative Bank this morning.

A hunt was launched for Thorat’s accomplice who succeeded in running away with the cash after the trader, Hijarbhai Abbasbhai Bhivandiwala of Raviwar Peth, lodged a first information report (FIR) at Bund Garden police station.

Bhivandiwala stated in his FIR that he had gone to deposit the money in the back when the incident took place. Police said Thorat and his accomplice diverted Bhivandiwala’s attention by telling him that he had dropped some currency notes and stole the money which the trader had kept on the counter.

Thorat and his accomplice were about to leave the bank premises when Bhivandiwala suspected a foul play and started crying for help. People present in the bank succeeded in nabbing Thorat following a brief chase. His accomplice escaped while taking advantage of the chaos that ensued, according to the police.
