NASHIK, May 9: A bandh was observed in Manmad today to protest a four-fold hike in water charges announced by the Manmad Municipal Council. The bandh call was given by the Purogami Vichar Manch, which pointed out that the town was facing water scarcity for years, getting one hour’s supply only twice a week. The Manch demanded immediate withdrawal of the hike and arrangements for adequate supply.
A procession was taken out this morning. Shops and establishments remained closed. There was no untoward incident.
The Municipal Council had sought to hike water charges in its meeting held on March 30. The proposal was rejected by councilors, who demanded adequate water supply, before approving the hike.
