
CHANDIGARH, Feb 24: The Punjab and Haryana High Court here has granted bail to a Sector 24 resident and his parents, convicted by a city court, in a dowry death case. The trio Ram Sanjiwan, his father Ram Baksh and mother Malti were earlier sentenced to seven years imprisonment and fined Rs 2,000 each by the UT District and Sessions Judge B.S. Bedi.
They were booked by the Chandigarh Police on July 17, 1996 under Section 302, 304-B, 498-A, 406/34 of the Indian Penal Code after Sushila Devi died at the PGI due to poisoning.
Meanwhile, pronouncing the orders, Justice R.L. Anand observed: quot;The sentence awarded to the appellant is seven years each. Appeal is not likely to be heard early. Bail to the satisfaction of the CJM, Chandigarh. Recovery of fine, if any is not stayedquot;. The defence counsel had earlier sought their release on bail in the interest of justice, besides the suspension of the conviction and the sentence, during the pendancy of the appeal.
