Training babus, the Harvard way! For Harvard University Kennedy School of Government in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has designed and developed a four-week mid-career programme for IAS officers. Over 350 IAS officers, in the age-group of 26 -28, will be given a lowdown on good governance.

The first programme was formally opened on Tuesday by Kennedy School Academic Dean Mary Jo Bane and IIM-A Director Bakul Dholakia on the IIM-A campus and was attended by around 100 IAS officers. IRMA chairman Dr YK Alagh said the programme will help a two-way learning process as the institute will also greatly benefit from the officers who will stay at the campus for the programme.

“The commencement of training of the IAS officers today with this phase V programme is a significant day in India’s quest for empowerment in the 21st century,” he said. According to Sebastian Morris, IIM-A faculty co-chair, the objective of the programme was to train professionals on good governance. The two institutes will make better understanding the challenges India faces on governance front, said Kennedy School professor Akash Deep.

The integrated curriculum for the month-long pro gramme, to be delivered by 12 Kennedy School and 14 IIM-A faculty members, was designed in collaboration.

So what’s in the curriculum? IAS officers will be tutored on governance, political economy, and policy analysis. Also, there will be lectures encouraging participants to work in groups so as to think out-of-the box, develop ideas and solutions.
