As kar sevaks attempting to sneak into Ayodhya tested security personnel, local religious heads and traders, opposed to the VHP8217;s sankalp and dev darshan programme, today demanded a ban on the proposed assembly on October 17.

While traders went in a delegation to Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav for a ban on the VHP meet, religious heads, led by Hanumangarhi mahant Gyan Das, have decided to tour Muslim pockets in Ayodhya tomorrow to assure them that trouble-mongers would be kept at bay.

8216;8216;Muslims are frightened of the VHP show. Hindus and Muslims live peacefully in Ayodhya and Faizabad. Kar sevaks coming from outside may try to instill a sense of insecurity but we will not let this happen,8217;8217; Gyan Das said.

With reports coming in of kar sevaks being rounded up in adjoining districts, the VHP today sealed Karsevakpuram. The VHP has a sizeable cadre presence in the areas adjoining Ayodhya and its office-bearers have already been tasked to guide in the kar sevaks past securitymen.

Faizabad range DIG V.K. Agarwal said policemen in plainclothes had been deployed in the villages to keep track of kar sevak movements. 8216;8216;We are going by past experience. This time, they will not be able to enter Ayodhya,8217;8217; he said.

ADC Law and Order Bua Singh did not rule out the chances of seeking help from the Army to ensure law and order: 8216;8216;If need be, we can also seek help of the Army.8221;

The police bandobast has hit hard local shopkeepers. On the road leading to the disputed site, they have been waiting in vain for people to come and make purchases ahead of the Kartik Mela.
