BHUBANESWAR, SEPT 6: Three veteran performing artistes of Orissa were presented with the prestigious fifth Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra award at a function here on Sunday.
Eminent Kathak dance exponent Birju Maharaj and Hindi film actress Hema Malini gave away the awards to the artistes Kasinath Punapanda (Odissi music), Guru Durlav Chandra Singh (Oriya theatre) and Manimala Devi (Oriya cinema).
Octogenarian Odissi dance exponent Guru Pankaj Charan Das who was also among the recipients of the award had earlier declined to accept the prize, saying that he (Das) being the guru of Kelucharan, it would not be proper for him to receive the award, instituted by Kelucharan, as it contradicted the Indian tradition of the shishya honouring the guru.
Organised under the auspices of Srjan, an Odissi dance centre run by guru Kelucharan, the function was attended by Chief Minister Giridhar Gamang and Minister of State for Home and Culture Prasad Harichandan.
