
KHARAR, May 15: The auction to privatise octroi collection in the township was adjourned today following a strong protest by local traders, councillors of the Opposition and representatives of various political parties. The new date of auction will be announced later.
The auction was scheduled to be held in the Town Hall of the Kharar Municipal Council at 3.30 pm today and the octroi collection from May 18 to March 31, 1999, was scheduled to be privatised by the Municipal Council during the auction. The reserve price of octroi collection was fixed at Rs 48.75 lakh.
Municipal Council president Ranbir Singh disclosed that the decision to adjourn the auction was taken so as to honour the sentiments of local traders.
Earlier, while addressing a largely attended protest rally in front of the MC office, the municipal councillors of the Opposition group, and representatives of various trade and political organisation of the township, strongly criticised the move of the MC to privatise octroi collection and demanded abolition of octroi in the state.
They warned that if the move was initiated again it would be strongly protested against. Some heated exchanges between the councillors of the ruling group and the protestors were also witnessed.
