Jeev Milkha Singh double-bogeyed the final hole of his second round to miss the cut by a solitary stroke, while Arjun Atwal just managed to sneak into the weekend rounds of the Barclays Scottish Open at the Loch Lomond Golf Club in Scotland.
Jeev, who was tied for the 30th position after he returned a one-under 70 in the opening round, saw his chance of earning a direct entry into the British Open slip away and will now have to participate in the qualifying stages for the Open on July 14 and 15, according to information received here today.
Atwal, who was tied at the 102nd position after a disappointing score of three-over 74 in the first round, began his second round in style with a birdie and went on to essay three more on the 4th, 14th and 15th. Bogey on the 6th and 16th handed him a second round score of two-under 698 and a mid-way tally of one-over 143.
Jeev on the contrary had a nightmarish start to his second round with bogeys on his first two holes. He recovered thereafter with birdies on the 9th, 12th and 13th and looked good to make the cut despite bogeys on the 10th and the 16th. However, the double bogey on his closing hole, ended his hopes of making it to the weekend rounds.
A top-30 finish at Scottish Open, a premier tournament on the European PGA Tour, which began on July 11 and gets over tomorrow, earns the golfers a direct entry into the British Open, the third major championship of the season that gets underway on July 18.
Fredrik Jacobson of Sweden with a half-way tally of 11-under 131 wrested the lead from first round leader Justin Rose of England. Jacobson was tied second after the first round.
Scotland’s Sandy Lyle was second four strokes behind at seven-under 135. Rose was tied third with Richard S Johnson and Carl Pettersson (both Sweden) and Miles Tuncliffe (England), who was tied second after the first round, at six-under 136.
