The Indian Army has achieved ‘moral ascendancy’ over terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir while bringing down violence in rural parts of Kashmir, Chief of Army Staff J J Singh said today. The Army Chief was in Bangalore to accept the first batch of 29 BFAT (Bogie-Flat Arjun Tank) wagons built by the public sector Bharat Earth Movers Limited. With better intelligence on terrorist hideouts the army could prevent incidents of grenade attacks and car bombs in places like Srinagar too, he said. The army has also been successful in preventing terrorist infiltration into J&K with a multi-tier deployment of forces to counter terrorists from slipping in. ‘‘We have got enough second and third tier counter infiltration deployments to take care of infiltration attempts,’’ he said.On peace efforts following Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit, the Army Chief said: ‘‘The PM has openly invited any of them for talks and said you give up arms, we will accept talks with you. He has left it open to everybody.’’The BFAT wagons flagged off for military rail by the General is meant to quickly transport heavy equipment like the tanks of the Indian Army. The wagons can carry a weight of 75 ton each. ‘‘The induction of these indigenously developed BFAT wagons would enable the Indian Army to transport its heavy equipment and battle tanks in a short span of time,’’ BEML chairman V R S Natarajan said.
