Another tiger dies at Birsa Munda, sixth in one month

Yet another tigress died at the Birsa Munda Zoological Park today, taking the toll since the past month to six. The zoo now has only two tigers, down from nine in July.

Yet another tigress died at the Birsa Munda Zoological Park today, taking the toll since the past month to six. The zoo now has only two tigers, down from nine in July.

The cause for the death is unknown; the post-mortem report is yet to be made public. Zoo director Deepak Singh said the tigress, Jyotsna, suffered a 8216;8216;convulsion8217;8217; yesterday.

On July 9, a tiger died, followed by a leopard the next day. Another tiger died on July 17. Three days later, a tigress, died. None of the post-mortem reports was made public. Singh, backed by zoo doctor Dinesh Kumar, attributed the deaths to a common disease 8212; babeiosis.

8216;8216;This disease affects the blood and liver of the animal,8217;8217; Kumar said. The tigress that died today, however, did not show symptoms. 8216;8216;On July 30, we had taken the sample of her blood. But there was no trace of babeiosis,8217;8217; said Kumar.
