WELLINGTON, JANUARY 9: Brian LARA was looking like a broken man today after New Zealand hammered the West Indies by eight wickets in the fourth one-day international.
The West Indies’ captain was close to tears after the match, telling journalists his team’s performance in losing the Test series 2-0 was worse than the beating they received from South Africa last year. “I thought it couldn’t get any worse and we did well against Australia. And now this.”
The West Indies scored 171 for nine in their 50 overs against New Zealand’s cruise to 172 for eight in 36.3 overs, and are heading towards a clean-sweep 5-0 loss in the one-dayers.
Lara said there were now more far-reaching issues at stake. “West Indian cricket is always going to be around…It’s a great legacy and we are not only trying to salvage a match, but to salvage our legacy,” he said.
