Another building collapses in Mumbai, 6 dead

At least six persons were killed when a portion of a building in south Mumbai collapsed on Wednesday morning.

A six-story office and residential building partially collapsed in India8217;s financial capital early Wednesday, killing at least six people, police said.

Police rescued four people from under wooden beams and in the debris after the rear of the 50-year-old structure fell down in Mumbai8217;s crowded Crawford Market, said police officer Shamsher Pathan.

Many residents fled their apartments and escaped as the structure started to crash down, he said, adding that a construction site next door may have contributed to the collapse.

Shoddy construction is often blamed for building collapses in Mumbai.

In August, a five-story building collapsed and killed 20 people after monsoon rains in a crowded residential neighbourhood of Mumbai, the capital of western Maharashtra state.
