Angry mob pelts garbage containers

A few MLAs, who are part of the states legislative advisory committee, along with Municipal Commissioner Praveensinh Pardeshi and Mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale, visited the garbage depot at Urali Devachi on Thursday morning.

In a meeting with PMC authorities and the MLAs, Pardeshi said the garbage depot is filled to its capacity. But there was no alternate place available to dump garbage. The MLAs asked Pardeshi to arrange for an alternate place as soon as possible.

The meeting was arranged by members of the Garbage Depot Hatao Samiti, including Sarpanch of Urali Devachi Balasaheb Lende, vice-sarpanch Sanjay Harpale and businessman Dilip Mehta.

Of the 29 MLAs in the advisory committee, only eight of them turned up for the meeting.

The villagers turned angry as the meeting lasted only a few minutes and the MLAs left without listening to their complaints.

Agitated villagers stopped the garbage containers on the road at 12.30 in the noon. They pelted stones and broke the glasses of about ten containers. They fled the spot before the police were alerted.

The agitators have decided to block all garbage containers going towards the depot till the government does take up steps for shifting the garbage depot.

A villager said that PMC authorities and MLA8217;s winded up their meeting quickly because they were not able to bear the stench that was emanating from the garbage depot.
