JAN 15: Viswanathan Anand won his first game as the world champion defeating Russian GM Sergei Tiviakov in a Sicilian Dragon in 46 moves in the second round of the Corus Super GM tournament at Wijk aan Zee on Sunday. With this, Anand occupied the second position with 1.5 points along with Vladimir Kramnik behind Garry Kasparov who scored two points form his first twogames with black.
Anand tactically outwitted Tiviakov and brought the black King out of its castle. The simplified Queen and rook ending offered practical chances for Anand to try his combination and on the 38th move the Indian won black’s quen for rook which virtually closed the game. Tiviakov laboured for another seven moves before signing the scoresheet.
After Monday’s rest, the highlight of the third round contest will be the clash between Anand and Kasparov on Tuesday.
Kramnik defeated Loek Van Wely of Netherlands in Grunfeld Defence. Peter Leko drew with Alexei Shirov in Sicilian Richter Rauzer in 28 moves.
Federov unleashed an all-out attack on Kasparov’s King in a Sicilian game. But Kasparov effectively thwarted Federov’s attack and won the game.
Jeroen Piket squandered a good position against Bulgarian Topalov. Russian Morozevich survived the day being two pawns down against Dutch veteran Jan Timman.
