Amid the investigation into the alleged suicide of a 29-year-old woman doctor in Phaltan in Maharashtra’s Satara, authorities suspended Sub-Inspector Gopal Badane from service after an inquiry found him guilty of “moral degradation, corruption, perversion, and misuse of authority.”
The doctor, who was working as a medical officer at a government-run hospital in Phaltan, was found dead at a hotel in the city on October 23. According to the police, they found a note written on the woman’s left palm, which said she was allegedly raped four times by Badane and also mentally and sexually assaulted by software engineer Prashant Bankar, for the last few months.
Following the discovery of the doctor’s body, a First Information Report (FIR) was lodged at Phaltan City Police Station under the Satara police against Badane and Bankar, both of whom have been arrested under sections 108 and 64 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
A native of Beed district, the doctor was living as a tenant in a house owned by Bankar’s father in Phaltan, the probe has revealed.
Following the inquiry against Badane, he was dismissed from service by Sunil Phulari, Special Inspector General of Police (Kolhapur Range).
“In connection with case number 345/2025 registered at Phaltan City Police Station, accused Gopal Balasaheb Badane, Police Sub-Inspector (suspended), despite having complete knowledge of police duties, displayed conduct reflecting moral degradation, corruption, and perversion, and misused his position and powers as a Police Sub-Inspector. His behaviour created a sense of insecurity and unrest in society. Such conduct from a Police Sub-Inspector, expected to be trustworthy, is highly objectionable and unbecoming of the post,” a press note issued from his office stated.
The note further stated that the act committed by him is “extremely serious and condemnable”.
“Therefore, continuing Gopal Balasaheb Badane in government service henceforth would not be appropriate from a public and administrative point of view. Hence, suspended Police Sub-Inspector Gopal Balasaheb Badane, attached to Phaltan Rural Police Station, Satara, has been dismissed from government service under Article 311(2)(b) of the Constitution of India effective from November 4, as per the orders of Sunil Phulari, Special Inspector General of Police, Kolhapur Range, Kolhapur.”
