
MUMBAI, July 12: Viswanathan Anand defeated Jan Timman of The Netherlands in the third round of the 27th Dortmund Grandmasters Championship today, according to information obtained from the tournament8217;s official Internet site. The win, achieved in 47 moves, was Anand8217;s first in the seven-round event after he had drawn his first two rounds with Veselin Topalov and Michael Adams respectively.
In another match, Peter Leko of Hungary recorded his second straight win to lead the eight-player tournament with 2.5 points. Leko accounted for Adams in 20 moves. Anand and Anatoly Karpov were joint second with two points each.
