Viswanathan Anand crashed through the defenses of Spaniard Alexei Shirov to score his second victory and remain in joint lead in the Corus chess tournament here.
In what could be termed as another rebound from peace to battles-fought-till-the-last-nail, the day produced as many as four decisive games out of a total seven. And quite interestingly all the winners were joint leaders coming in to this round.
Anand remained atop with Englishman Michael Adams, Bulgarian Veselin Topalov and Briangames champion Vladimir Kramnik on four points out of a possible six.
Peter Leko of Hungary stands sole fourth on 3.5 where he is followed by the likes of Russian champion Peter Svidler, Vladimir Akopian of Armenia and Loek van Wely of Netherlands who all are just half a point adrift of the Hungarian. Standing joint ninth on 2.5 points are Russian Evgeny Bareeev and Dutchmen Jan Timman and Loek van Wely while Shirov, Zhang Zhong of China and Viktor Bologan share 12th position.
After a deserving rest day the players appeared set for their targets as a result of which hard fought battles were played.
