Chief Minister Mayawati and senior BSP leaders are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the much-hyped April 14 ‘‘Pardaphas rally’’ turns out to be a bigger hit than the ‘‘Dhikkar rally’’ organised on September 28.
Mayawati, who has called for the rally on Babasaheb Ambedkar’s birth anniversary to expose Mulayam Singh’s Samajwadi Party and the Manuwadis (including BJP members), is reviewing the progress on a daily basis. She has distributed work equally among party leaders. While some have been asked to maintain an adequate supply of food and drinking water, others have been told to ensure a safe journey for the participants . Arrangements are also being made for their stay at railway stations and bus terminuses.
The District Magistrates and Senior SPs have been instructed to mobilise at least 5,000 people from each Assembly segment together with the local BSP leaders. The CM and other leaders fear that the turn-out may suffer due to the harvesting season. So, party members from other states have been invited.
Learning a lesson from the Dhikkar rally where about a dozen people were killed in a stampede at Charbagh railway station, the BSP is hiring five special trains to ferry the participants. The CM has also urged party supporters not to travel without tickets.
Chief Secretary D.S. Bagga has already met railway officials to ensure a smooth journey. Even the eight-member team of the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee, led by chairman Buta Singh, which inspected the Charbagh station yesterday, sought an assurance from the Northern Railways that it would evolve a system to avoid chaos on the day of the Pardaphas rally.
