
CHANDIGARH, August 5: Sanjay Public School, Sector 44 won the Chandigarh State Sub-junior (Under 16) football tournament, beating SD Public School 1-0 in the final here at the DAV Sr Secondary School, Sector 8 ground today.
The match-winner was scored by Amandeep in the 47th minute when he took control of a pass given by teammate Rajiv and converted it, much to the joy and relief of the Sanjay Public School supporters.
Both the teams were equally balanced and there was not much to choose between. The game started on a fast pace. The SD boys mounted pressure from the kick off but failed to break the tight defence of Sanjay Public School. On the other hand, it allowed the Sanjay Public School lads to play a coordinated game.
They started asserting themselves. The ball was travelling from one corner to another corner but forwards of both the teems failed to utilize the chances which came their way. Right striker Chetan of Sanjay School got a golden chance to score but his shot touched the goal post and went out. Left striker Gopal Thapa of SD Public School also missed a sitter in the 24th minute.
The first half was goalless.
After the lemon break, SD’s Gopal Thapa was the main culprit again, missing another sitter in the 37th minute.
Then, it was left to Amandeep’s heroics to seal the fate of the match. Gaining in confidence after this goal, Sanjay Public School mounted more pressure. It could easily have been 2-0 but for Chetan missing a golden chance to score in the 50th minute.
The Sports Authority of India Director-in-Charge, Suresh Harmilapi was the chief guest and gave away the prizes.
