India day was observed today at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival which is giving a special focus to the country from May 20 to 23.

Besides a business promotion get-together and a meeting to publicise India’s entertainment industry, Information and Broadcasting Minister Sushma Swaraj, who is in Cannes leading a large Indian team, will inaugurate a CD-Rom on Raj Kapoor produced by his daughter Ritu Nanda, an official release said.

The Minister and other delegates will be escorted up to the red carpeted steps to the festival venue as part of the ceremonial welcome and the President of the Cannes International Film Festival Gilles Jacob is hosting a dinner for Swaraj and members of the Raj Kapoor family.

The festival is paying a special tribute to Raj Kapoor by screening three of his classics — aag, awara and barsaat — from May 21 to 23. The festival authorities have titled the perspective ‘‘Raj Kapoor — The prince of Bollywood’’. Sanjay Leela Bansali’s Devdas, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dikshit and Aishwarya Rai, will be premiered at the Cannes Festival on May 23. The Indian pavilion has been set up, on a much larger scale, at the village international this year.
