ISLAMABAD, January 5: Battling accusations of match fixing and threats from disgruntled cricket fans, the celebrated all-rounder Wasim Akram has stepped down as captain of Pakistan8217;s cricket team saying the pressure was too much.

The veteran of 77 Test matches and 238 one-day internationals, Akram today said death threats and match-fixing allegations prompted his resignation as captain, although he will remain with the team. 8220;These allegations match-fixing have taken a toll on me,8221; he told the Associated Press in an interview. 8220;I am a human being too and there is a limit to everything. I can8217;t sustain the pressure any more.8221;

Akram is being replaced by former vice-captain Rashid Latif.
