Striking resident doctors of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on Wednesday gave authorities a deadline till 5 pm to hand over their degrees, failing which they would continue their agitation.

8220;We have decided to intensify our agitation and stop work in all departments if we do not get our degrees by 5 pm this evening,8221; President of the AIIMS Residents Doctors Association RDA Dr Kumar Harsh said after a general body meeting here.

Holding Health Minister Ambumani Ramadoss responsible for the situation, he said, 8220;If the minister wants he can solve the problem within 15 minutes. We just want our degrees and nothing else8221;.

Meanwhile, more than 30 agitating doctors who were detained on Tuesday night when they tried to march towards Ramadoss8217;s house to register their protest have been released.

The strike, which began at 7 pm yesterday, has brought services at the premier health institute to a standstill.

Scores of patients were seen waiting in front of non-functioning OPDs, while those who had come from far-flung areas were seen waiting outside the hospital.

The doctors had said that the functioning of the emergency services and ICU will not be affected.

The doctors have alleged that those who have cleared MBBS, MD, DM and MCh courses have not received their degrees for the past three years.

They said medical students were facing problems while seeking jobs or pursuing higher studies abroad as authorities there were demanding original certificates which they were unable to produce.
