BANGALORE, JULY 11: The Advanced Jet Trainers will first grace Karnataka8217;s skies. By January 1, 2001, three of them will be manufactured in Bidar. The price-negotiating committee will soon finalize the deal, Air Marshal, J S Rai, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Training Command has said.

8220;We cannot replace the Mig-21s as quickly as we want. It all comes down to money,8221; said Rai. The 66 AJTs are expected to make training 8220;more realistic and meaningful.8221; The infrastructure for the AJTs are being set up in Bidar.

The Centre is giving a grant of Rs 50 crore over the next three years to modernize training equipment. The new purchases will include simulators and electrical boards.

The training command is launching a computer literacy drive and wants to ensure operational awareness among all Air Force personnel. The command is already training pilots from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Zambia.

The City Air Force medical centre which already performs kidney transplants will soon have an artificial limbs unit.
