Abraham sets national mark

Hari Shankar Roy came close to establishing an all-new mark in high jump today as the ace high jumper from Bengal set a new meet record on the final day of the 13th Federation Cup Athletics Championship.

Hari Shankar finished with an impressive mark of 2.21 metres, falling just 0.4m short of the national record of 2.25m, set by himself in the Asian Track & Field meet in Singapore in 2004. His brother Abhishek went on to win the silver medal with an impressive jump of 2.1m. Vinod Kumar of Gujarat finished with the bronze medal, registering 2.05m.

Joseph Abraham, CRPF’s top male athlete, broke his own record of 50.22 seconds in the 400m hurdles, clocking 50.04 sec to finish with the gold. In the women’s section, Preeja Sridharan of Kerala, chosen the best female athlete of the championship, earned the gold in the 10,000m event, recording a national record of 33:19.71 sec. P Muthuswamy of Tamil Nadu set a new national record in the 200m round, clocking 21.70 sec to break Anil Kumar’s previous national record of 20.73 sec.

The Bengal women won the overall team championship, while Army won the team championship in the men’s section.

Women: 10,000m: Preeja Sreedharan (Kerala) 33:19.71 (NR); High Jump: Hari Shankar Roy (Bengal) 2.21m (NMR); 400m hurdles: Harani Chadrashekhar (Karnataka) 1:00.31sec; 1500m: Sinimol Paulose (Jharkhand) 4:11.66 sec; 200m: Rajinder Kaur (PP) 25.11sec.
