They aim to paint the plight of flood victims. In a succession of fast-moving and highly stylized scenes, 25 actors re-enact critical moments in the lives of flood victims who strive for their survival. Swatantra theater comes up with a play Aaj ki taaza khabar that brings forth the atrocities the flood victims in Bihar get subjected to not only by nature but also by the system that claims to aid and protect them. Directed by Abhijeet Choudhary and scripted by Choudhary, Dhanashree Heblikar and Rakesh Shah, the play through the magnifying prism of theater, gives a human face to the plight of the unfortunate.

The poignant portrayal of the pain of being mercilessly uprooted from a place because of a natural calamity is done with sensitivity and style-the help of interweaving of scenes to cause stress and effect. “We interweave two instances together emphasizing on the common thread that runs through them making them indispensable for each other in carrying the plot further. The idea is to create a fluidity of movement and a reminder that this is theater’s version of reality,” elaborates Choudhary.

The idea of scripting a play for Bihar floods stemmed from the thought of empathizing with a state, which in the city was targetted by MNS. ” We are staging this play to bring across the idea that we too feel for those who are stuck in floods and are fighting for survival. We want people here to know what the people in Bihar are going through. We want people to feel for their pain,” says Heblikar.

(Aaj ki taaza khabar will be staged on September 20 at Ambedkar Sanskritik Bhavan, from 6pm onwards)
