The Supreme Court on Friday granted an interim bail to Yusuf Abdul Razak Memon, sentenced to life imprisonment in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, on medical grounds. Memon would be on bail till July 14, a Bench headed by Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan said, as it went through his medical report placed by the CBI and ordered his release. Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for Memon, submitted before the Bench that the medical report had confirmed that he had been suffering from schizophrenia and needed a supportive environment that could not be provided in jail. “Since 1992, he has been a patient of schizophrenia. He is not in a right state of mind, so he is entritled to be released on bail,” he argued. The CBI did not oppose his bail but sought review every three months. Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium, appearing for the CBI, said the court should review his interim bail after every three months. On February 12, the apex court had declined to grant him bail and directed the CBI to conduct his medical examination and file a report.
