146;93 blasts: 3 more found guilty

The Special TADA court, trying the 8217;93 serial bomb blasts case, today found Shaikh Ali Shaikh Umar, Shahid Nizamudin Qureshi and Parvez Qureshi, guilty of involvement in the explosions.

Special Judge Pramod Kode convicted Umar of five charges, including criminal conspiracy, abetting and knowingly facilitating terrorist act between December 8217;92 and April 8217;93 by assisting absconding and prime accused Tiger Memon in smuggling, landing and transportation of arms, ammunition and explosives at Shekadi, Raigad district on February 3 and 7.

Umar was also found guilty of attending meetings with other conspirators at Al-Husseini Building, where the conspiracy was chalked out. He, along with others also carried out a recee of the BMC and the BSE buildings. Umar was also found guilty of violating the Arms and Explosive Substances Act for illegally possessing seven AK-56 rifles, 14 magazines, four hand grenades and two detonators.

He was found guilty of being in the Maruti van, laden with arms and explosives for attacking the BMC building. However, the mission was aborted and the van was abandoned.

Judge Kode, however, exempted Umar from charges of participating in weapons-training conducted by Tiger Memon at Sandheri and Borghat in Raigad district.

Unlike Umar, Nizamudin was found guilty of only one charge 8212; his role in the landing operations at Shekadi. However, he was cleared of criminal conspiracy, agreeing to go to Pakistan via Dubai for training and attending meetings at Dubai. Judge Kode while accepting the statement of the approver did not accept Nizammudin8217;s confessions.

Parvez was found guilty of abetting terrorist act and going to Pakistan for training in the handling of arms, ammunition and explosives.

Judge Kode stated that although there was little proof of his participation in the meetings and loading, his presence there has been established. Parvez who was deputed to throw bombs at the fishermen colony had withdrawn at the last minute.
