Seventy-six of the 131 inmates of a Patna remand home escaped after overpowering the guards on Friday night. However, 12 of the escapees returned today, said Patna DM Deepak Prasad. Tension started after the Home Guards were replaced with men from the district police to guard the home that keeps juvenile delinquents and lost children.

Problems of the home are myriad and the Patna High Court has been regularly monitoring measures being taken to improve situations. Removing the Home Guard jawans, who were suspected of running drug and liquor racket in the premises, was one such measure against which the inmates revolted.

Several cases have been detected in which the criminals reportedly fudge their age and land up in the remand home as juvenile delinquents. They team up with the guards. After the Patna district police took charge two days ago, the inmates began an agitation, and on Friday night overpowered the seven men. Around 11.30 in the night they broke free.
