5 escape from jail in UP, 1 still at large

Five prisoners fled from the jail in Aurangabad through a drain in what seemed to be a scene reminiscent of a Bollywood flick.

It was a great escape, but in vain.

Five undertrials fled from the district jail in Aurangabad through a newly constructed drain in what seemed to be a scene reminiscent of a popular Bollywood flick.

But fortune brought four of them back to square one — they were apprehended within an hour.

“The five undertrials escaped via a newly constructed drain after removing a loosely fitted iron cover around noon,” Aurangabad Superintendent of Police Ganesh Kumar said.

Kumar said some inmates informed prison authorities about the incident and soon an alert was sounded across the distict.

While four were captured with the help of the local residents, one was still at large, he said.

Kumar said while two undertrials — Guddu and Teju Chauhan — were accused in several cases of dacoities, the rest were in jail on charges of minor offences like theft and snatching.

Both Guddu and Chauhan have been apprehended, he said.

Chauhan is accused in four cases of dacoity, including a train robbery in which a man was killed.

Raids are on at possible hideouts to apprehend Chauhan, the SP said.

Bobby Deol had adopted a somewhat similar way to escape from jail through a drain in the movie ‘Gupt’.
