AHMEDNAGAR, JUNE 24: The district and additional session judge S G Kendre has awarded six months’ rigorous imprisonment to four accused in the Manikdaundi (Tal Pathardi) communal riots in September 1994. The 39 other accused were, however, acquitted for want of sufficient evidence.

Members of two communities were engaged in constant dispute over possession of the temple here. There was a dispute between the two communities over Balkhandi Babu Devsthan.

However, in 1994 there was a riot at the time of Ganesh immersion procession followed by assault, arson and stone throwing. Police had filed cases against 71 persons. The police could arrest 40 but the remaining 28 were absconding.

Those ordered 6 months RI are Isakkha Pathan, Sharif Pathan, Ayub Fakir Pathan and Layak Mohammand Pathan under Clause 323 and fined Rs 500 and also one month’s simple imprisonment and Rs 100 fine.

Out of 28 absconding, 20 had appeared before the court on their own and a case would be filed against them.

Popat Todkar had filed FIR with the police about stone throwing on Ganpati immersion procession and also about incidents of stabbing, stone throwing in which at least 12 persons were injured.
