MUMBAI, April 10: Three people died and two were injured when a 10-foot high boundary wall of the MTNL Exchange building collapsed in Dahisar today.

The incident occurred at 4 pm while contract labourers were digging a trench alongside the boundary wall of the building located off the Western Express Highway, near Dahisar Check Post. The victims have been identified as Rambhau Amarsingh Jadhav (35), Suresh Rohidas Jadhav (18) and Meram Chavan (15), while the injured are Subhash Shivram Rathod (34) and Vijay Mangilal Rathod (16).

The police have not registered any case yet while they have taken into custody the son of the contractor P N Singh who undertook the civil work near the wall.

All the workers at the site were from thesame family and nearly 40 of them hailed from Manora taluka of Akola district. They had been working in Dahisar for the last eight months and stayed in a slum colony behind the Dahisar bus station.

One of the workers at the site Waman Chavan blamed the absence of proper footing for the wall which came down. “It was constructed from the ground level and the four feet trench which was being constructed could not hold the wall’s weight.”

Lack of job opportunities in Akola had forced the Chavan, Rathod and Pawar families to shift to Mumbai. Namdeo Pawar stated that all were working for the PN Constructions, which undertook the civil work, for a long time and been loyal to the firm because of regular work.

Pawar termed the collapse as `god’s wrath’ adding that after dragging their dead and injured he has no will or strength to work at the site.
