Goa goes to polls on Saturday amidst unprecedented security. With four to five candidates in the fray for every seat, the authorities have pressed into service 30 companies of Central forces. For the first time in Goa, the CRPF is being posted at all sensitive booths in the state, Chief Electoral Officer Ramesh Negi said.

Two companies of Central forces have been deployed in both North and South Goa districts for strike duty. In all, 266 polling stations have been declared sensitive or hyper-sensitive. According to election officials, the main cause of concern was distribution of money by candidates on the eve of elections. The CEO8217;s office had received a number of complaints in this regard.

Dhumal well placed in Hamirpur

SHIMLA: Former Chief Minister and BJP candidate Prem Kumar Dhumal seems comfortably placed for bypoll for the Hamirpur Parliamentary seat. Though the ruling Congress claimed it had recovered some lost grounds in the last three days, its candidate Ram Lal Thakur8211;a Cabinet minister8211;was still struggling to strengthen his position. Allegations of corruption by rebel Congress legislator Vijay Mankotia had also harmed Congress prospects.

BJP, JDS lock horns in Ullal

MANGALORE: The stage is set for a showdown of sorts in Ullal, coalition government partners JDS and BJP have locked horns for the Assembly the bypoll. An estimated 1.60 lakh voters are to decide the fate of the five candidates, including U T Khader Cong, Chandrasekhar Uchil BJP and Aboobkar Natekal JD-S. The bypoll was necessitated following the death of sitting Congress member U T Fareed and the party has fielded his son Khader, apparently aiming to cash in on sympathy factor among the electorate.
