Former UP Minister Amarmani Tripathi and his wife Madhumani surrendered today, bringing to an end the two-day ‘‘drama’’ following the Supreme Court cancelling their bail.

Amarmani and Madhumani were remanded in judicial custody after their surrender this afternoon in the court of the district and sessions judge here. The couple, accused in the murder of poet Madhumita Shukla, surrendered as per the Supreme Court order.

The Supreme Court had earlier cancelled their bail bonds and directed them to surrender in court. However, the couple had failed to do so due to the advocates’ strike in the civil court here. The advocates had boycotted court in protest against police lathicharge on Allahabad lawyers on September 26 and resumed work on Thursday.

‘‘Amarmani and Madhumani will be produced in court on October 6. The administration will provide a separate vehicle to bring Amarmani from the jail to be produced in court in future under a special security arrangement. We had requested the court for this,’’ Amarmani’s lawyer A P Singh told this reporter on the court premises today. Special Public Prosecutor K P Singh confirmed the special security arrangement.

Around 3.30 p.m. today a cavalcade of vehicles reached the main gate of the civil court. Amarmani alighted from his vehicle and walked towards the court surrounded by supporters. Unlike in the past, the supporters avoided raising slogans. Madhumani who arrived earlier was in the court by then.

She had entered through a different gate apparently to avoid media persons. Amarmani joined his wife in the court of the district and sessions judge. They stayed there for at least an hour.

Around 5 pm, two Lucknow police vehicles equipped with beacon lights were parked in front of the gates to the court’s main building. Amarmani and his wife emerged separately from the court, and his supporters split into two groups. Amidst high drama, Amarmani’s supporters shoved media persons aside to get Madhumani to the rear seat of one of the police vehicles.

After it left with Madhumani, one supporter told Amarmani: ‘‘Ab Bhaiya aap baithiye.’’ Pat came the reply: ‘‘Bhaia kyon baithe. Press wale hain. Ham inse baat kar lenge.’’ He invited queries from media persons. ‘‘I have been falsely implicated in this case. But people are with me,’’ he said.

Later, he sat on the front seat of the second police vehicle and left for the jail.
