MUMBAI, August 15: Seventeen students of National College, Bandra have been debarred from examination for issuing bogus certificates, the secretary of the SSC and HSC board, G Kanthe said on Thursday.

The certificates were issued by de-recognised colleges like Saran College at Powai and Guru Govind Singh at Sewri, said Kanthe. The principal of National College R P Bijani said the guilty students were no longer with the college. While the students have been punished, action is yet to be taken against the people involved in issuing bogus certificates and marksheets.

Both the board and the National College, when contacted by Express Newsline, were not willing to say what steps were being taken to check the use of bogus documents in admissions.

“The government should take strict action against people issuing bogus certificates. There is very little colleges can do about this, except perhaps keep an eye for such students. People who issue bogus certificates should not be let off lightly. Only deterrent punishment will work,” said the secretary of the Mumbai Junior College Teachers Union (MJCTU), M R Andhalkar.
