NAGPUR, JUNE 29: Over 150 persons, a large number of them children, suffered from food-poisoning during a marriage reception at Hotel Mount in the Sadar locality of the city, on Wednesday evening. A majority of them have been admitted to Government Medical College and Indira Gandhi Medical College, while some have been admitted in private nursing homes.
According to GMC authorities, the victims, admitted to their hospital, suffered from vomitting and loose motions, but their condition was stable.
The incident occurred at the marriage reception hosted by one Virendra Kamble. The Kamble family had booked a hall at the hotel and had arranged food for the guests. Within minutes of consuming the food, they started vommiting and having loose motions, with the first to fall prey being children. They were soon admitted to the Indira Gandhi Medical Colege and Government Medical College.
From 9 pm onwards, even the elders started pouring in at these hospitals and this continued till midnight, it was learnt. The hospital staff too proved inadequate to deal with the arrival of the patients in such large numbers. The patients were put on saline drip and immediately transferred to the wards. GMC Dean Dr H Nagarale also rushed to the hospital.
According to sources, over 75 patients from the marriage reception were admitted till midnight at GMC alone and the trickle continued till reports last came in. An equal number of patients have been admitted at Mayo Hospital, it is learnt.
While the hospital staff was busy attending the patients, some Dalit Sena activists gathered outside the GMC and raised slogans demanding that the food served at the reception be collected and sent for examination.
A posse of policemen from the Ajni Police Station also reached GMC to prevent any untoward incident as the number of patients and the relatives attending them began swelling. It could not be known if the police had collected food samples.
