Good morning,

Ever heard the phrase, “killing’em with kindness”? Well, with only a day to go for the mega India vs New Zealand final of the ICC Champions Trophy, the opponent team’s humility might just push India into an emotional ride. Though India hopes to get angry, it’s not an easy task, for they need to hate a team that doesn’t instigate or insult. In his Sports column, Sandeep Dwivedi highlights that India’s toughest challenge on the field would be to hate the nice guys. But how? He writes: “India needs to search for the devil in mild-mannered soft-spoken men with angelic faces. And anyone who vaguely knows the modest-to-a-fault captain Mitchell Santner or the equally self-effacing senior pro Kane Williamson will tell you it is tough to paint them as villains.”

With that, let’s move on to the top 5 stories from today’s edition:

🚨 Big Story

Highlighting the “restrictive” nature of tariffs that India charges from the United States, President Donald Trump announced that the former has agreed to “cut their tariffs way down.” Trump’s remarks came hours after India said it is looking at deepening trade ties with the US through reducing tariff and non-tariff barriers under a bilateral trade agreement. Washington is also asking New Delhi to buy more American oil, gas and defence equipment to bring down the trade deficit that stands at around USD 45 billion in India’s favour.

“We can’t be from nowhere”: The Indian Express meets some of the 63 inmates of the Matia camp whose uncertain status has spurred the Supreme Court to question the process of deportation of individuals who have been declared as not being Indian citizens but whose nationality is not ascertained. At the core of what the Supreme Court is pushing the state and the Centre to answer is: what happens to people declared foreigners by foreigners’ tribunals in Assam after they are detained?

💡 Express Explained

The United States Supreme Court has rejected the plea of the 2008 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana against his extradition to India. 64-year-old Rana had filed an “Emergency Application For Stay” after US President Donald Trump approved his extradition following his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month. Rana will be extradited on the basis of the India-US Extradition Treaty signed by the two countries in 1997. Here’s Tahawwur Rana’s story.

✍️ Express Opinion

In our Opinion section today, Sanjay Srivastava delves deeper into the outrage over Trump’s treatment of the Ukrainian president, which serves nobody, but distracts one from the long history of Euro-American leaders who bullied and damaged the world in pursuit of their countries’ interests. Srivastava writes: “The result of “Trump is a very rude man” and “Putin is a mad man” school of analysis is, on the one hand, the spurious distinction between Trump and his predecessors and, on the other, the terrible devastation of Ukraine, one that might possibly have been avoided through recognising the ways in which nation-states define their self-interest.”

Wondering what to watch this weekend? Well, we’ve got you covered! Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor-starrer, Nadaaniyan, directed by first-timer Shauna Gautam, has hit the screens, however, the story might just revolve around Delhi’s “pampered puttars and bigdail betis.” Shubhra Gupta, in her review, writes: “This is a film which has been created by-and-for hashtags, with zero insights into the demographic it represents… There are ‘red flags’ and ‘green flags’, ‘elitism’ and ‘classism’, ‘adulting’ and ‘parenting’, phrases which feel are meant to be cool but seem grafted on for attention.”

That’s all for today. Have a lovely weekend!

Until next time,
Ariba
