Emraan Hashmi recalls a fan encounter that was disturbing for him (Photo: Emraan Hashmi/Instagram)Emraan Hashmi recently recounted an unsettling experience at the “pinnacle” of his success, sharing that though fans often express admiration, some interactions can cross boundaries, leading to discomfort or even anxiety.
“At the pinnacle of my image, there was an event in Hyderabad where security kept a certain number of guards, but that fell short. The expected crowd turned out to be 50 times more. This is the most, I guess, disturbing experience…because of my image, I could feel a male come and plant a wet, slurpy kiss on my cheek. And the memory of it…was a little bit of paan…it was wet…a little bit of cigarette breath..that’s it…I have had some crazy ones…” the Murder actor recounted in a chat with Mashable India.
Maintaining a balance between interacting with fans and protecting personal space can be challenging for public figures.
While most fans are respectful and kind, some may behave inappropriately or overly aggressively, leaving the individual feeling violated or vulnerable, said Dr Chandni Tugnait, psychotherapist, director, Gateway of Healing, adding that “these disturbing interactions, though rare, can shake one’s sense of security.”
How to deal with such experiences?
Reframe the encounter: Rather than focusing solely on the discomfort, consider the encounter a moment of self-reflection and part of the profession.
Disengage with compassion: If the encounter becomes overwhelming, disengaging respectfully is okay. “Politely excuse yourself or walk away, ensuring that you protect your emotional space. Compassionate disengagement prevents escalation and allows you to maintain control over the situation,” said Dr Tugnait.

Process the experience: Channel your feelings into something creative, like writing, art, or physical activity. “This method helps release pent-up emotions and provides a safe outlet for processing the discomfort,” said Dr Tugnait.
What to note?
According to Dr Tugnait, the key in these situations is not to internalise the discomfort but to create coping mechanisms that allow one to process and release emotions.
“Maintaining boundaries, staying grounded, and seeking emotional release through healthy outlets are crucial steps in reclaiming personal peace after unsettling encounters,” said Dr Tugnait.
