Cobras are among the most feared and fascinating snakes in the world. With their iconic hood and potent venom, these reptiles demand respect and caution.

While most cobras prefer to avoid human contact, accidental encounters can happen, especially in areas where they are native. Knowing how to react can mean distinguishing between safety and a potentially dangerous situation.

Here’s a guide on how to survive a cobra encounter and handle the situation safely:

1. Stay calm and avoid sudden movements

If you encounter a cobra, the most important thing to do is remain calm. Panicking or sudden movements can startle the snake, increasing the likelihood of defensive behaviour. Instead, stay as still as possible and slowly assess the situation.

2. Do not make eye contact or threaten the snake

Cobras often raise their hoods and hiss when they feel threatened. This is a warning display, not an immediate attack. Avoid making direct eye contact, as the snake may perceive it as a challenge. Instead, keep your gaze low and slowly back away.

3. Give the cobra an escape route

Cobras usually strike only when they feel cornered. If possible, create a clear path for the snake to retreat. Most snakes will choose to slither away rather than engage in a confrontation.

4. Do not attempt to catch or kill the cobra

Trying to attack or handle the snake is extremely dangerous. Many snakebites occur when people attempt to kill or remove a snake themselves. Instead, allow the cobra to leave on its own, or if necessary, call a professional wildlife handler.

5. Keep a safe distance

A cobra can strike from a considerable distance—up to one-third of its body length. Maintaining a distance of at least 6–8 feet is recommended. If the cobra is already in an aggressive posture, increase your distance slowly and carefully.

6. If bitten, seek immediate medical help

Cobra venom can be deadly, and every second counts. If you or someone else is bitten:
