As air quality worsens in different parts of the country, and particularly in Delhi and the National Capital Region, it’s vital to protect not only our health but also the well-being of our pets. Indianexpress.com spoke to experts who shed light on how pollution impacts animals and how we can safeguard them.

Dr Gautam Anand, senior veterinary consultant at Dr Anand’s Pet Clinic in Delhi, said that air pollution can cause respiratory issues, allergies, and even lung cancer in pets. Dogs, in particular, are vulnerable to poor air quality and can contract temporary respiratory issues that may lead to chronic conditions like asthma. “Keep an eye on the AQI level while taking your dog out, keep your house doors and windows closed, vacuum your home frequently, and make sure you change your HVAC filter often,” he said.

Karthik Rajan, chief operating officer, SAVAVET, a leading pharmaceutical company catering to animal well-being, said air pollution is responsible for causing respiratory issues and eye irritation in pets. “It is very important that pet parents take their pets for walks post peak traffic hours, when the air quality improves,” he said. He also recommended consulting a vet in case of any respiratory concerns.

J S Ramakrishna, business head at Carniwel, suggested adding turmeric or coconut oil to pet meals to boost immunity, but after consulting a vet. “If possible, gently rinse their eyes or noses with saline water to relieve irritation,” he said.

Tips to keep pets safe from pollution

Rashi Narang, founder and creative director at Heads Up For Tails, suggested the following tips:

1. Monitor air quality levels: Use websites and apps to track real-time AQI, and avoid outdoor walks on days with poor air quality. Plan indoor activities on such days.

2. Seal windows for cleaner indoor air: Keep windows shut and use heavy curtains to block out pollutants. Consider an air purifier for an extra layer of protection, especially in areas where your pet spends most time.

4. Hypoallergenic baths to help pets relax: Pollution particles can irritate pets’ skin. Choose pet-safe shampoos that soothe their skin and ensure you dry the furry beings thoroughly post bath to avoid chills in cooler weather.
