Two years ago, Bollywood filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan entrusted her family room’s redesign to none other than her long-time friend, interior designer Gauri Khan. The transformation was featured on the home décor show Dream Homes with Gauri Khan, where Gauri brought her signature style to create a space that was elegant, functional, and brimming with personality.

Farah described her family room as chaotic, filled with mismatched colours, and cluttered with outdated pieces. “It has too many colours, including a blue-coloured wall which is not trendy, and a twelve-year-old orange carpet,” Farah admitted. She jokingly added, “I can’t afford real art, so I had put my kids’ art,” prompting Gauri to tease her, “I will give you my art.” A delighted Farah replied, “My children’s art can go to hell; I am getting Gauri’s expensive art.”

Farah wanted the room transformed into a functional yet intimate parlour where her family could unite. She envisioned a space where her eldest daughter could paint, her son could watch football, her youngest daughter could play with their dog, and she and her husband could host friends. “It used to be a family room, but now it’s like a bhangar, kachra room,” she explained, underscoring her desire for a complete overhaul.

The transformation: Elegance meets utility

Gauri took on the challenge, turning the chaotic room into a cohesive entertainment space. She began by clearing the clutter and bringing in a fresh, tropical vibe with large plants and tasteful artwork. The blue wall was replaced with elegant tropical wallpaper, while the dominant colour palette shifted to calming whites and greys.

To add warmth and vibrancy, Gauri incorporated statement furniture pieces in bold shades of yellow and red. The outdated sofa and dining set were refurbished, giving the room a sleek and modern look. The space now included all the elements Farah desired—a big TV for family viewing, cosy corners for painting, and enough seating for hosting intimate gatherings.

Farah’s reaction to the makeover was nothing short of astonishment. Entering the revamped room, she exclaimed, “Whose house am I in?” She later compared the transformation to a dream, saying, “I was living in Lokhandwala, and now I am living in Italy.”

Beyond the redesign, the episode highlighted the deep bond between Farah and Gauri. Reflecting on their friendship, Farah lauded Gauri for staying grounded despite her family’s fame and success. “Despite all the success, the money, and people fawning over you, she has remained a middle-class Punjabi girl to date. That is the best part about her,” Farah shared.
