Wamiqa Gabbi, popular for web series like Jubilee and Modern Love: Chennai, recently shared in an interview with ELLE Magazine that she loves age-old beauty secrets to take care of her skin. While she touched upon the wonders of rose water as a toner and using coconut oil for her hair and skin–what stood out to us, was her admission of using turmeric and honey as a face mask for glowing skin and reducing blemishes.

Indianexpress.com spoke to Dr Sri Sahithi Konidena, Founder and Chief Dermatologist of Prime Derm Skin and Hair Clinic, Hyderabad, to understand how this natural face mask can help them out.

“Turmeric and honey is an ancient combo possessing anti-inflammatory and anti microbial properties that has been used cosmetically for thousands of years to moisturize, exfoliate, heal, to some extent it is believed to reduce acne and give a decent glow,” shared Konidena.

However, she warned about exercising sufficient caution when it comes to applying this face mask.

“Patients suffering from allergies, family history of allergies, or frequent sun exposure due to their occupation may want to be careful. Increased caution should be observed when applied over sun-exposed areas due to the potential photosensitizing nature of curcumin,” she said.

“In the recent times, the number of contact dermatitis patients has risen due to home remedies. I would recommend applying it occasionally, with a contact period of less than 10min. The combination can prevent blemishes but when applied as a cosmetically made product rather than a direct application at home,” the dermatologist recommended.

According to her, summer might not be the best season for turmeric application.

Which health risks can be associated with this combination?

“The products that have been used for many years can still result in dermatitis either as a result of sensitization to the product over time or due to changes in product formulation ( it has become difficult to procure a quality product due to food adulteration) we cannot be sure that we have pure turmeric powder and honey is not contaminated,” said Konidena.

The additives to give yellow color to the product can be dangerous which can give serious allergy reactions. “Post application of these ingredients, some people might develop immediate sensation of itching followed by red bumps or rashes which can form pigmentation patch due to inflammation later on,” said Konidena. According to her, it is important to be cautious before applying direct natural products on face considering circumstances of food adulteration.

Konidena also shared that immediate allergic reactions can be managed with topical corticosteroids, and antihistamines. “Topical corticosteroids are typically required for two to three weeks to prevent rebound. In chronic phase, in addition to topical steroids, emollients are used,” she added.
