In a society where physical appearance often becomes a yardstick for success, the pressure to conform to certain beauty standards can take a significant toll on individuals. From suggestions to alter natural features to unsolicited comments about one’s looks, such experiences can shape how people perceive themselves.

Sharing her experience of being asked to change her nose and jawline during auditions, actor Triptii Dimri, revealed how she stood firm in her decision to embrace her natural self. In conversation with Filmfare, she said, “I was auditioning somewhere. I was asked to change my nose and jaw. So I said, ‘Paise nahi hai mere paas yeh sab karane ke liye.’ Abhi bhi kitne mere friends mujhe bhejte hain ki, ‘Triptii tuney kya kara liya hai yeh? Dekh rahe hain hum Instagram pe (‘I don’t have the money to get all this done.’ Even now, some of my friends send me messages saying, ‘Triptii, what have you done to yourself? We’re seeing this on Instagram’).”

She added, “Of course, you don’t judge people who have done it. Jisko jo karna hai apne saath (Anyone can do whatever they want with themselves), you can do it. It’s your face, your money. You can do what you want but mujhe woh acha nahi lagta jab nahi kiya ho aur phir log kuch kuch bolte hain (I don’t like it when I haven’t done something, and then people say things).

Reflecting on not wanting to feel insecure with how she looks, the Animal actor said, “I don’t ever want to feel insecure about myself. Jo hai mera hai… chahe aapko main gandi lag rahi hu, achchi lag rahi hu (Whatever I have is mine… whether you think I look bad or good)… this is who I am and I am going to be for the rest of my life.”

These pressures are not limited to specific professions but are deeply ingrained in everyday interactions and societal norms. However, embracing one’s natural self or opt for cosmetic changes is deeply personal and nuanced.

While some find empowerment in making changes that align with their self-image, others may feel a sense of pride in staying true to their natural features.

But what strategies can help someone build confidence in their natural appearance despite external pressures or negative comments?

Neha Cadabam, senior psychologist at Cadabams Hospitals, tells indianexpress.com, “Societal beauty standards often equate worth with appearance, creating immense pressure on individuals to conform. “Criticism and unrealistic beauty standards can significantly impact mental health, leading to low self-esteem, body dysmorphia, and heightened anxiety or depression.”

Cadabam explains, “Building a healthier body image starts with self-acceptance, focusing on qualities like kindness or intelligence rather than physical appearance. Affirmations like “I am more than my looks” can shift mindsets. Limiting exposure to unrealistic social media content and following accounts celebrating body positivity helps create a supportive environment. Professional support, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), effectively addresses insecurities and improves self-esteem. Surrounding yourself with positive influences who value you for who you are reinforces confidence.”

How should one navigate the decision to undergo cosmetic changes without feeling judged or insecure?

Before deciding on cosmetic changes, Cadabam asserts, it’s essential to understand the motivation behind them — whether it’s an intrinsic desire for personal satisfaction or external pressure to meet societal standards. “Reflecting on these reasons helps ensure a balanced approach. Consulting a licensed professional is crucial for informed decisions, with studies in JAMA Dermatology highlighting the need to manage expectations to avoid dissatisfaction. Cosmetic enhancements should reflect personal agency, not external validation, and never compromise mental well-being. Building a supportive network of nonjudgmental friends or family can make the experience empowering and affirming,” the psychologist informs.
